Sorry I’ve been MIA lately, I actually have a really good excuse.
Saturday I spent most of the day in bed, I was just utterly EXHAUSTED. I slept a full night Friday night, then a 4 hour nap on Saturday, then a full night of sleep on Sunday.
On Sunday, I was feeling a little more energetic but I woke up from a nap with a really full feeling in my ear but no pain. Towards bedtime that night, it started to get more and more painful. I tried a hot pack and NSAIDs and tried to get some rest.
Sunday overnight my ear pain really accelerated to the point where I couldn’t sleep and I started vomiting through the night. It seriously felt like someone was stabbing my ear drum. Any kind of tiny movement brought overwhelming nausea. Then, all of a sudden, I felt fine – the ear pain had completely disappeared. I couldn’t hear anything out of my left ear but at least I wasn’t in pain.
The nausea followed me into the next day as I made my way to our ear, nose and throat specialist who thankfully, fit me in. They confirmed, I did have a nasty ear infection, it hadn’t ruptured yet, and they were surprised I didn’t have any pain with it. I was started on antibiotics.
The nausea was still incredibly overwhelming and any kind of movement would send me retching. Mom kept the boys so I could go home and sleep and try not to move. I ended up even having to call in sick to work. I somehow got the boys to bed.
Well, I woke up last night in the middle of the night to gunk coming out of my ear. My ear drum had ruptured but my nausea is just about gone. I still have NO pain with my ear, I just can’t hear anything out of it and it is very full.
My conclusion is that the pressure must have been making me nauseated, similar to how someone with vertigo has dizziness and nausea. Once that pressure released, the nausea eased up, thank goodness! I can take some pain and some hearing loss but that nausea was overwhelming.
I’ve had two boys who really struggled with bad ear infections and I so feel for any kiddo who has an ear infection on a regular basis, this whole experience was AWFUL. Hopefully as the infection clears up my hearing will come back.
Hopefully I’ll be back on track here soon!

I’m sorry you had such a miserable few days. Bummer. Nice that your mom could help with the kids while you got better.
I dislike nausea and that dizzy feeling. Glad you’re better.
this is the season for all kind of stuff, especially for a nurse, around all those weird bugs out there. I am still masking and will continue until I, I feel safe. I don’t care who stares at me. Stay safe
My son had terrible ear infections and asthma attacks when he was little. He would come to me in the morning with blood and gunk on his face all dried up. He pillow would look like a murder scene. He never had alot of pain tho. A few years ago I got really sick with upper respitory infection, ear pain, pink eye… I told my son that if there was ever a time when I had been unsympothetic to his pain I was really sorry. I can’t ever imagine going through that again much less often like he did.
