I’m a little heated over this so pardon me.
You’ll remember yesterday that I posted about the severe and devastating flash flooding in our area that took place over the weekend, you can read more on that here.
Trying to see the light in the situation, I made a Facebook post about looking for the helpers. I love this quote inspired by Mr. Rogers.

I posted these pictures of the sandbaggers:
And our local bar put a sign out that read FREE LUNCH for First Responders, Fireman, and Sandbaggers:

Even though our community was rocked yesterday, we all came together, gave our time, and cancelled our plans to help our neighbors.
AND THEN somebody had the nerve to take MY POST applauding our community and trying to find the silver lining through all of this weekends events, and used it for their political gain.
A local democratic organization shared the post on their page and used it to attack their opponent. They wrote:
“Seems fitting that Rep Ashley Hinson is spending the day at a fundraiser with disaster-avoiding Senator Ted Cruz. Our towns are dealing with major flooding and she is jumping ship to schmooze with #CancunCruz.”
I let them know I was NOT okay with ANY political organization using MY content or my post about appreciating my community to attack anyone.
When we were out sandbagging, we didn’t only help the democrats or only help people with a Trump flag in their yard. Not once did some political figure come out and get their hands dirty with us. We were neighbors helping neighbors. We were a community coming together.
Can’t we all just get along? Why do we need to attack other people? Why can’t a good thing be done just to be a good person? Why do politics need to be brought into EVERYTHING, something as simple as appreciating our community turned into a political move.
I asked them to take the post down. Not because I’m a democrat or because I’m a republican (I’m a neither). But because politics have divided this country more in the past 18 months and I’ll be damned if MY personal post applauding our small town community is going to be weaponized against someone else for political gain.
Am I over reacting? Maybe. But that just really rubbed me the wrong way after the weekend we had.
LEAVE. POLITICS. OUT. OF. IT.
That’s all.

You go girl. Taking a community coming together to help. And then some mean spirited person trying to make it political is WROnG in every way. You handled that beautifully ????
Very well said and I applaud your community for coming together and helping each other during this flood. Bravo to all of you!
No, you were NOT overreacting, what they did was terrible and wrong.
Its a difficult thing trying to get along these days.
Bravo!!!
You have every right to demand they remove THEIR opinion from your community work post. I’m not sure how our Public Health Pandemic became political but it is truly Public Health.
In the same way, your community’s willingness to get out, dirty your hands, and exhaust your bodies for the greater good is Humanity in action. Thank you all!
It seems every party is trying to take advantage of the communities helping each other out and and making it political. Which is partly why people hate politics.
Did they take the post down?
Good work!! Mr. Rogers and your community never thought about sides, one winning and the other not. Glad you followed up with the sharing of your community’s good work in trying times!!
Well said and not over reacting. Your a human looking at and for humanity.
