Bathroom Progress!

YOU GUYS! Hold on tight, this blog post is a wild ride.

Picture this: Monday morning, 7 am, we get a phone call that the plumbers will be here to work on our bathroom in 20 MINUTES! AH!

We spring out of bed, run around the house like crazy, the boys have a full farm setup on the back porch, the bathroom is a disaster, we had about an hour of tidying to do in 20 minutes. I’m not even wearing a bra yet guys like, its an issue. One thing about Craig, I love him dearly, he has no high gear when it comes time to hurry and get stuff done.

So imagine my panic when the plumbers pull in, I’m still not fully dressed and my dear Gannon who is on Augmentin for his ear infection has a diaper blow out down to his ANKLES! I can’t throw him in the bath tub so I throw him in the sink while Craig is showing the plumbers around the basement/bathroom.

Okay so now the dog needs to be kenneled, Carver is already playing 20 questions with the plumbers, I’m just trying to get the kids out the door so we aren’t in the way!

So we get over to my moms, not long after I get a call that I need to go home because there’s an issue. Uh Oh. See those giant holes in the floor? yeah, that was under our old bathtub. That’s an issue.

Second issue? This was the gouged out 2×4 holding up the floor under the tub and the toilet. In this picture it is braced but YIKES! No wonder we had a bit of a slope in the bathroom! This project just got a little more spendy.

First estimates sounded like the whole subfloor, (including underneath our newly installed bathroom vanity) would need to be redone. THANKFULLY, our favorite contractor and family friend Brad – his team was in and out in just a few hours and the project was back on track!

So here is a side note – I was debating on including this because I know there is a mom shamer reading this somewhere that’s gonna judge but I can’t help but laugh!

So I had to work Monday night. On days before I work overnight, I nap with the boys. Gannon sleeps in his room, Carver sleeps in my room with me in my bed, I put on a movie and we fall asleep.

Imagine my surprise when I wake up to a banging and clanging somewhere in the house and Carver is no where to be found. I go downstairs and Carver is playing 20 questions with the contractors, he has all of his tools out and is “helping them” install the subfloor in the bathroom! I had no idea how long he had been down there! I was MORTIFIED! They probably thought he was home alone or something! I guess they will have to add a baby sitting fee to the bill.

So the plumbers were back again already this morning to rough in the shower, tub, and sink! CHECK IT!

Carver crawled in the tub with me and I had a drink and he ate his pumpkin pie.

Then Carver asked if he could do my makeup! Sure! Why not! We washed our hands in the sink for the first time too! It’s all finally coming together!

It was just a goofy/silly/random night celebrating the progress in the bathroom. The tiler is coming to start tiling the floor and shower tomorrow! Part of me wonders if we will have a bathroom that is functional by mid next week but I also thought this remodel would be done in June so I’m not holding my breath!

That’s what I know friends! I hope you all have a wonderful day and thanks for reading! By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be on my way to Iowa City, Gannon has a follow up appointment with urology and I’m taking a car load down to the homeless shelter in Cedar Rapids! More on that tomorrow!

Nothing like a laugh to start the day. Word to the wise from someone who has remodeled four houses. Be prepared with extra money for any room that has water, bathroom, kitchen or laundry room. Water rots out wood! Looking good so far!!

Ohhhhhh I remember when we attacked our bathroom. They had put a plastic barrier OVER the floorboards so the second we took up the first corner of vinyl….black mold 🙁 Off to get respirators. And when we pulled up the toilet ? The floor joist (yes the 2×12) was rotted completely away-it’s a wonder we weren’t in the crawl space already! (No kids here so we did it all ourselves).

I can’t wait for you to have your completed (safe) bathroom!

Nice job on Mommy’s makeup Carver 🙂 and good job making sure the plumbers do their work right 😉

    Happy Wednesday!

What a surprise to see that hole in the floor, remodeling jobs bring lots of surprises, ask me how I know. How nice that Brad and his crew were able to keep you on track and so quickly. I don’t think the contractors minded having Carver lend a hand, supervisor in the making. I hope Gannon is feeling better being on meds and no more baths in the sink, poor guy.
You look great sitting in your new tub, cant wait to see it more completed.

Good luck with the bathroom. I know it will be wonderful when it is done.

I want to mention that I just finished listening to “Decluttering at the Speed of Life” by Dana K. White.
Great book, I just accidentally cleaned out a pantry with four big boxes of stuff for donation , and I wasn’t even trying! A few months ago I had listened to Marie Condo’s book. It was also good. But Dana’s book is fresh on my mind. The pantry WAS full to the max, now it is more manageable. I could probably get a couple more boxes of stuff out of it.
